The brief
Most free tools online are paid for with your data. Ask an AI assistant a question and it is logged and added to a profile; give a shop your email address and it is passed on and tracked. We wanted tools we would happily use ourselves: as useful as the big names, without anyone watching. So we built Blot, a set of tools for using the web without being watched.
What we did
- Named and designed it around a single idea: Blot blots out who you are. Inky, editorial type, text that stays blotted out until you hover or tap it, and a headline that blurs “Nothing” as you read it: “Everything you need. Nothing about you.”
- Built a custom AI agent backend in Rust, running as edge functions close to each user, so answers come back quickly from wherever you are in the world.
- Built the web app in React: the agent researches questions with live web search, shows each step it takes and cites its sources, so every answer can be checked. It forgets you when it is done.
- Built an email relay that gives you a made-up address, such as quiet-heron-1234, for every site you sign up to. Mail is forwarded to your real inbox with trackers removed, so senders never learn who you are.
- Made forgetting the default. Anonymous use has no analytics, cookies or fingerprinting, and only a country code goes along with searches.
- Made memory and chat history optional. When they are switched on, they are encrypted with AES-256 under a key tied to your password, with no back door, and conversations are never used to train AI.
- Kept most of it usable without an account, with a free tier that is genuinely useful and Blot Pro for heavier use, so the product answers to its users rather than to advertisers.
The result
Blot is live at blot.tools, free to use without signing up, with Blot Pro funding its development. It is our best design work to date, and where we try out the private, careful approach to AI that we bring to client work. The AI agent and email relay are the first two tools; more privacy tools are on the way.
